My heart is heavy after yesterday’s bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan.
My heart goes out to the families of the U.S. service members lost in the attack on the Kabul airport. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The service members who lost their lives while saving other Americans and Afghans represent the best of America in their courage, humanity, and service.
We must also not forget all the Afghan lives lost yesterday. It is never right to attack civilians, especially those who were just trying to leave to establish a better life for their families.
As we secure American soldiers and personnel and evacuate American citizens, it must remain our priority to also rescue our Afghan allies who put themselves in harm’s way to aid us in our mission.
For the troops still serving there, thank you for your heroism. I pray that you finish your mission and come home safe.
For those of us at home, we must commit as a nation to welcome and resettle Afghan refugees.
