Dear John,

The Sentencing Project is growing and changing in important ways, including by focusing our mission and building capacity to achieve our goals of advancing racial justice and ending mass incarceration. This transition has required several of our veteran staff to take on new and challenging responsibilities, and I cannot be more pleased by the results. Today I am very pleased to share that Nicole D. Porter has been promoted to Senior Director of Advocacy in acknowledgement of her critical leadership both within the organization and the larger community.

Nicole has directed and anchored advocacy campaigns to challenge mass incarceration in meaningful ways with The Sentencing Project for over 10 years. Her talents have resulted in historic advocacy wins, ground breaking research and the formation of long-lasting movements in states across the country. A small sampling of her work includes:

Advancing Racial Justice:

The Sentencing Project's ongoing work to advance racial and ethnic impact statement policies that evaluate potential disparities of sentencing legislation prior to adoption has flourished under Nicole’s guidance. She has testified in state legislatures and offered technical assistance and supported coalition development. Wins were achieved in seven states.

Expanding Democracy:

Nicole worked with DC’s Restore the Vote coalition to successfully expand voting rights to more than 4,000 imprisoned District residents. The first such law to pass in the United States. She also supports voting rights campaigns in Kentucky and Mississippi among others.

Transforming the Meaning of Justice:

Nicole prioritizes sentencing reform that achieves lasting impact. She has pioneered research on prison closures and their repurposing in order to solidify permanent decarceration. Her work includes joining successful efforts to close prisons in Texas, and elevating solutions outside of the criminal legal system in order to dismantle mass incarceration.

Everyday I rely on Nicole’s issue expertise and insightful political analysis to advance The Sentencing Project’s policy agenda. Our growing team of advocacy staff will benefit from her mentorship and vision. Congratulations, Nicole, and thank you for all that you do!
