For years now it’s been clear that far-right Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson has no interest in serving his constituents.
Whether it’s providing millions in tax giveaways for his billionaire campaign donors, spouting unfounded conspiracy theories and revisionist history regarding the January 6 Trump Insurrection, calling climate change “bullsh*t,” or spreading misinformation regarding COVID-19, Senator Johnson has proven that he is a danger to our democracy, our environment, our public health, and our fundamental rights.[1][2][3][4]
Senator Ron Johnson has got to go. And flipping his seat from red to blue is absolutely vital to keeping and expanding the Democratic majority.
The candidate to do it is current Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes – a progressive powerhouse who is the state’s first Black Lieutenant Governor and the second African American ever elected statewide in Wisconsin.
In addition to being the strongest candidate to beat Ron Johnson, Mandela will be a bold voice for progressive change in the U.S. Senate.
The Cook Political Report has labeled the race a “toss up.”[5]
Wisconsin Republicans know that Senator Johnson’s seat is vulnerable. So, while some huddle behind the scenes to find a possible Republican replacement, the Far Right is readying its massive war chest to dump millions into this race.
It’s imperative that we make Mandela Barnes the nominee for this seat.
At People For, we know Mandela well. He’s a friend and colleague whom we’ve been proud to support in his past elections and watch become one our movement’s most effective leaders.
The contrast between Mandela and Ron Johnson could not be more stark. And when, with your support, Mandela flips this Senate seat, being rid of Sen. Johnson won’t be the only benefit to Americans.
By expanding the Democratic majority in the Senate, progressives will be better equipped to pass historic legislation that would improve the lives of countless people across the country, put us on a path to save our democracy, and strengthen the American Way for all.
With such a narrow majority in the Senate now, it’s going to be crucial that progressives fight for every seat we can in the midterms, and Sen. Ron Johnson’s seat is ripe for flipping – especially if Mandela Barnes is the Democratic candidate.
