Good news

After five years of intensive work by the Institute, and a Supreme Court ruling in 2016, we are thrilled the Scottish Government has finally shut down its intrusive Named Person scheme. Monitoring families’ everyday activities cannot be justified. Parents, not the state, are responsible for bringing up their children.

The enclosed newsletter also highlights some of our work helping to protect street preachers such as Dale McAlpine. We are encouraged by recent news that he has been awarded £4,000 for wrongful arrest. Christians need not fear to share the Gospel publicly.

Please pray

There is much to give thanks to God for. There is also much to ask for. Our nation needs God to bring repentance and revival.

Praying for those in authority is especially important at this time. An election seems imminent. Brexit may dominate the headlines but we must not forget other vital concerns. Please pray that plans for no-fault divorce will fail. Pray for our schools, where children risk being subjected to inappropriate teaching on homosexuality and transgender ideology. Pray that abortion and drugs laws would not be weakened further.

Our Week of Prayer runs from tomorrow, Sunday 20 October, until Saturday 26 October.

The day-by-day prayer guide is below

Week of Prayer: Autumn 2019

20-26 October

Week of Prayer

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans 12:12

  SUNDAY     MONDAY     TUESDAY     WEDNESDAY     THURSDAY     FRIDAY     SATURDAY

Sunday

Those in authority

Praying for those in authority is about the good of our fellow citizens, and ultimately the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

“[Pray] ...for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:2

Please pray:

  • That in God’s mercy the current period of political uncertainty will not be exploited for evil;
  • For the UK Government, Parliament and devolved assemblies to have wisdom to do what is right;
  • For believers working in politics, the civil service and judiciary to be salt and light;
  • That any new Stormont Assembly will overturn Westminster’s imposition of same-sex marriage and abortion on Northern Ireland.

Monday

Free speech

Gospel freedom and free speech are being undermined by the illiberal idea that everyone has the right not to be offended.

“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” James 5:16

Please pray:

  • With thanksgiving that Christians are free to proclaim the Gospel in the UK;
  • That the freedom to disagree with same-sex relationships and transgenderism may be protected;
  • That so-called hate crimes will not be used to target Christians.

Tuesday

Family freedom

Parents have the primary role in raising children. Families must remain free from wrongful state interference.

“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Please pray:

  • That state authorities will respect parents’ God-given role;
  • That parents won’t be criminalised for gently disciplining their own children;
  • Against any unnecessary regulation of families who home-school;
  • That Christian parents remain free to raise their children in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Wednesday

Marriage

No-fault divorce is the greatest attack on the married family since the introduction of same-sex marriage.

“...what God has joined together, let man not separate.” Matthew 19:6

Please pray:

  • That plans for a disastrous no-fault divorce Bill for England and Wales would not progress;
  • That people in Northern Ireland who disagree with same-sex marriage may have the same protections as those in the rest of the UK;
  • That lawmakers, the media and wider society would show greater respect for true marriage;
  • For Tony Rucinski and James Cross at the Coalition for Marriage as they seek to promote traditional marriage.

Thursday

Schools

Schools are under enormous pressure to conform to secular values.

“...in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

Please pray:

  • Giving thanks for the freedoms Christians do have in schools. Pray they will continue;
  • Against the teaching of gender ideology;
  • That lobby groups will not hijack Relationships Education;
  • That Ofsted inspections will be fair;
  • For Christian teachers, governors and students seeking to remain faithful to the Bible’s teaching.

Friday

Society

There is constant pressure to move away from God’s good instructions for his world.

“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Jeremiah 29:7

Please pray:

  • For God in his mercy to grant repentance and revival in the UK;
  • That opposition to fast-track ‘sex changes’ will continue to grow;
  • For greater value to be placed on the lives of the unborn, elderly and infirm;
  • With thanks that assisted suicide is still illegal;
  • That drugs laws will not be relaxed;
  • For gambling to be more strongly regulated.

Saturday

Christian witness

Acting as salt and light, we can be a Christian influence in a secular world.

“…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Please pray:

  • For more Christians to speak and act with wisdom and courage in defence of biblical truth;
  • For greater understanding among believers of the immense freedom to express our Christian faith that we still enjoy;
  • Giving thanks for the success of The Christian Institute’s Living Christianity study series.
