John,
At the end of this email I'm going to ask you for a donation to help us win the battle for fair maps. But first, let me tell you why I'm cautiously optimistic.
The first reason is that Democrats have an advantage in the American electoral system: the people support their policies. We don't have to cheat to win.
Republicans know diluting our political power is the only path to maintaining their own. That's why they use partisan and racial gerrymandering and why they've been passing voter suppression bills across the country. The new census numbers show that America is increasingly diverse, urban and younger and the GOP is aware that they struggle in these communities. So their strategy is to keep some Americans from having their voices heard.
That's appalling, but it's the reality and it's one the NDRC has acknowledged and been preparing for over the past four-plus years. It's why we worked so hard to reform redistricting, so that states like Colorado, Michigan, and Virginia have independent commissions drawing the legislative maps.
Republicans still control the redistricting process in too many states. But if they think that means we're going to give up on our goal of fairness, they're dead wrong. Because here's the second reason why I'm cautiously optimistic: We have people power on our side. The NDRC has always been about building a movement, educating people, and spurring them to action. That's how we've always gotten change done in America -- by getting involved, by raising our voices, by marching, by protesting.
The people of this community are demanding change, even -- or should I say, especially -- in states where Republicans think they can get away with manipulating the maps. We've already won a number of victories, and I believe that together, we will win many more.
We've arrived at the part of the email where I ask you for a donation, John. If you believe in the work we are doing and want to see more people power overcoming entrenched special interests, I need you with us in this fight.
