It’s one of our favorite days of the year: National Dog Day!
We love our furry four-legged friends at the Innocence Project, and for many of the exonerees we work with, their canine companions have helped them navigate a new world and rebuild their lives as free people.
Take, for example, Malcolm Alexander and his dog Inn (short for Innocence) — Inn was born in the Louisiana State Penitentiary where Malcolm was serving a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. Malcolm raised the puppy behind bars for her first nine months of life. Malcolm likes to say they have a bond like no other because they “came through the fire together.”
Malcolm was exonerated and freed on Jan. 30, 2018. The next day, he and Inn were reunited, and both were finally free. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
