📓 The power of positive representation

Another academic year is beginning for LGBTQ youth, an exciting but also fraught time for LGBTQ middle and high school students who report feeling unsafe at school disproportionately to their peers. One way schools can support LGBTQ youth is by including positive content about LGBTQ people and issues in classroom curriculums. Representation in school curriculums can affirm LGBTQ youth’s sexual and gender identities. And the impact is staggering: LGBTQ youth in affirming schools had nearly 40% lower odds of attempting suicide compared to LGBTQ youth in non-affirming schools. Our August research brief shows there is power in positive representation in schools.

🏛️ Charleston: The first city in West Virginia to protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy

This past week we commended the City Council of Charleston, West Virginia for passing an ordinance that prohibits licensed mental health professionals from subjecting LGBTQ youth to the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy. Charleston is now the first city in the state to protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy.

The Trevor Project X Hot Topic Foundation

With National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month right around the corner in September, our mission to provide life-saving services to LGBTQ youth moves to center stage. Our research shows that respecting the language that LGBTQ youth use to self-identify can reduce depression and suicide risk, and change lives for the better as a result.

In honor of this important September campaign, we're excited to share an exclusive first look at our newest partnership collaboration with Hot Topic Foundation. Available in stores and online beginning September 1, Hot Topic is unveiling three different pronoun enamel pins—She/Her, He/Him and They/Them—because when we choose to share our own pronouns, we can create a more supportive and accepting space for all. 100% of net proceeds from these pins (a minimum of $3 per pin sold) will be donated to support our life-saving work.
