Eviction Moratorium Extended Until October 3, 2021
We are thrilled that the CDC extended its COVID-related eviction moratorium through October 3, 2021. Click here to read more about what this moratorium extension means for struggling renters.
But this is not enough!! The extension applies only to communities that are seeing exponential increases in COVID cases, and renters' inability to keep up with the cost of rent needs to be related to COVID loss of income.
There has been millions in emergency rental assistance given to communities, but implementation and spending of that assistance has been slow. (Read about how Washington, DC has been fairing in ensuring rental assistance makes it to those in need.)
Please share widely this state-by-state list of resources for renters needing assistance
Child Tax Credit is Working!!
The expansion of the Child Tax credit has been a huge success in only one month. 69% of the people report using these additional funds for food and it has actually reduced the use of emergency food at food pantries by 25% in just the first month.
Under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the amount of the child tax credit for 2021 is $3,600 for children 6 years of age and below and $3,000 for kids aged 7-17. The benefits will be paid in monthly installments of $300 and $250 respectively. The credits established are per child and replaces the previous payment method of having to wait until tax time to receive the credit.
This is an improvement that will have ripple effects in reducing childhood poverty. We call on Congress to make these recent increases in the Childhood Tax Credit permanent!
