Beyond the Mask: Promoting Transformation and Healing in School Reopening

With many families preparing for the school year, and with many schools having already begun, school districts must invest in student mental health to address the crisis that the pandemic—and long-standing systemic failures—have created. In a new series of six fact sheets being released within the week, we analyze how schools in each state plan to use federal funds through the new Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). The American Rescue Plan allocated $122 billion for school reopening. ESSER funding offers an opportunity to invest in the mental health of young people; however, schools must be intentional about substantially investing in student mental health.
