Back to School: Civil Discourse in the Classroom

Welcome back to school! The Bill of Rights Institute is excited to help teachers like you as you navigate through the challenges of another year. Every other Thursday we will be releasing a new eLesson that is ready-to-use for your environment.

Whether you are teaching in-person or remotely this year, we understand how important it is to teachers to have an open and welcoming classroom. This eLesson will help your students practice and understand civil discourse in a low-stakes setting that can help the classroom environment.

How do you teach politics in today's history classroom? BRI Director of Outreach Rachel Davison Humphries was joined on Tuesday, August 24 for the third of a three-part summer series exploring the third rails of dialogue by Dr. Wayne Journell, Professor of Social Studies Education and Associate Chair of the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Journell is a former high-school educator and his research focuses on the teaching of politics and controversial issues in secondary education. You can watch all of the recordings in the series HERE.
