Dear John,
This week marks 75 years since the Liberal Party of Australia was formed.
Our Party has a very proud record of driving Australia’s economic and social progress.
When, in 1979, I first met Alan Greenspan (who later became US Federal Reserve Chairman) he remarked that “Australia has the biggest middle class in the world”.
This was a real tribute to what was achieved in the post war years.
Between 1949 and 1972, Australia’s economy tripled in size, while millions of Australians became home owners.
Since then, Coalition governments have consistently delivered economic strength and stability, including more jobs, responsible budgets, tax relief and better services.
Australia’s most important security relationship was cemented with the ANZUS Treaty in 1951. We continue to invest strongly in our defence and security.
It was the Liberal Party that dismantled the White Australia policy, and first endorsed freedom of parental choice in education through the delivery of state aid to independent schools. It has also led the way in developing trade with Asia.
From establishing Kakadu National Park and declaring the first section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, to practical grassroots initiatives, we have a strong record of protecting the environment.
To mark our 75th Anniversary, the Liberal Party has produced a video highlighting some of our achievements. To watch it, you can click the link below.
