We just achieved a significant victory in the fight for voting rights, John.
On Tuesday, my Democratic House colleagues and I voted to strengthen the Voting Rights Act of 1965, honoring the legacy of Georgia congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis.
Now, we must call upon the Senate to pass this crucial voting rights legislation, so all Americans can have equal access to the ballot box.
Over the past decade, the Supreme Court has eroded key voter protections within the Voting Rights Act -- clearing the way for states to make it harder for folks to vote, especially people of color.
We are already seeing that nightmare scenario play out, John. So far this year, 45 states have enacted more than 200 laws altering election rules making it more difficult for voters to cast their ballot.
And these needless restrictions -- including onerous new voter ID requirements, removing ballot boxes, and curtailing mail-in voting -- fall prominently on voters of color, continuing the injustice of racial discrimination at the ballot box.
