Welcome to fawcettfaves. A monthly roundup of feminist updates and cultural highlights curated by Fawcett exclusively for members.
We have recently had some tech problems, which means that you haven't heard from us in a while. We're really sorry about this and we aren't ignoring you, we promise! Therefore we would like to share with you our August edition of FawcettFaves, normally only sent to our Fawcett members. Apologies for the silence and please stay tuned for more regular Fawcett news!

Women's Equality Day

Today marks the anniversary of the 19th amendment, which prohibits denying the right to vote on the basis of sex in the United States. More than a century later women worldwide are still pushing for full equality. And we need solidarity so that we can remain courageous, determined and inspired. Together with our members and supporters, Fawcett celebrates our shared achievements and remains steadfast in continuing the fight.
Steps forward: The Mayor of West Yorkshire announced that the Combined Authority will publish its first ethnicity pay gap report in bid to tackle race inequalities. ([link removed])

Mattel has created six new Barbies that celebrate women in science ([link removed]) , including Sarah Gilbert, the Oxford University Professor who helped develop the Oxofrd/ AstraZeneca vaccine.

Steps backwards: Only mere days after Joan Smith wrote about the connection between misogyny and terrorism ([link removed]) , a community is reeling after a horrific shooting in Plymouth was carried out by a man who referenced 'incels' in his online videos ([link removed]) .

This week the Office of National Statistics has released data for the first time ever on safety and harassment ([link removed]) . Findings include that 2/3rds of women aged 16 - 34 years experienced harassment in the last 12 months and 1 in 2 women feel unsafe walking alone after dark near home. What will it take to have police take the deadly threat of misogyny seriously ([link removed]) ?
Make Women Visible

Our latest polling shows that conservative voters want to see investment in the social security system ([link removed]) .

And our latest briefing looks at how the coronavirus outbreak impacted women on lower incomes ([link removed]) . The briefing is published jointly with UK Women's Budget Group, Engender and Close the Gap (Scotland), Women Equality Network Wales, and Northern Ireland Women’s Budget Group (NIWBG). Key findings include:
* 1 in 3 of furloughed young women from low-income households had their salary topped up by their employer
* 43% of young women from low-income households said their financial situation had become worse because of the pandemic
* Over a half (57%) of young women from low-income households said their mental health had become worse
