Dear John, As you may have heard, Texas passed an abortion ban that reaches new lows. This law not only bans abortion care, it incentivizes anyone — including anti-abortion activists — to sue abortion providers and anyone else who helps a person obtain an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. If allowed to go into effect on September 1, this law would not only cut off the vast majority of abortion access in Texas, but open the floodgates to allow anyone who harbors a grudge, who opposes abortion, or who simply hopes to secure the bounty allowed by this law to file a lawsuit. Thankfully, a solid team of reproductive freedom lawyers, providers, and advocates are fighting in court to have this law blocked. And this Monday, August 30, a judge in Texas will address their request to stop the law from going into effect until this case is resolved. John, while we wait to hear what happens next, we want to remind you that at NIRH and our Action Fund, we won’t stop fighting at the state and local levels to protect and expand reproductive freedom -- including access to abortion -- everywhere we can. We are committed to our mission, we are supporting our partners in Texas and beyond, and we will continue the fight on the ground while the lawyers are in the courts. Remember: together, we can and will push forward for state and local policies that can protect and expand access to care. We hope you get some rest this weekend, take a deep breath, and know we’re here with you for all the fights ahead. In solidarity, ANDREA MILLER President Purpose. Power. Progress. |
