Friend, since the 7.2 magnitude earthquake devastated southern Haiti last week, a team of trauma surgeons—including Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff from across Haiti and beyond—has been working nonstop to care for injured people.
We’ve now expanded our emergency response, sent additional supplies, and are assessing how to provide even more services to people in remote communities cut off from care. As the situation evolves, here is a look into our response:
Over the weekend, MSF deployed 100 tons of medical and relief supplies. The cargo includes items for quickly setting up emergency medical structures, materials to install drinking water supply systems for 30,000 people, and medical supplies to treat 30,000 patients.
Above, MSF teams are on the ground providing medical support and supplies in the provinces of Grand’Anse, Nippes, and Sud, which are the areas that were hit the hardest.
A landslide on the road from Les Cayes to Jérémie initially cut this population off from assistance. Rocks blocked the road for at least a kilometer, preventing a small medical team from reaching the injured. Our team quickly pivoted, taking a helicopter to reach Saint Antoine hospital in Jérémie.
“When we arrived, we asked, ’What can we do for you?’ We picked up where [the local team] started. And so we operated on many patients. Sunday we had four patients, Monday we had nine patients, and after that 10 to 12 patients per day.”
- Dr. Xavier Kernizan, MSF surgeon responding to needs in Jérémie.
Since Friday, the surgical team in Jérémie has treated more than 50 patients for injuries, 36 of whom underwent surgery, while others received casts or splints.
