** We have to defend science and New Orleans.
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear ,

In the midst of the most deadly surge of COVID-19 thus far, our city and its future are being kicked around like a political football.

Last week, Republicans on the Louisiana State Bond Commission blocked more than $30 million in funding for vital construction projects in the New Orleans community in response to my common-sense COVID-19 safety measures.

The Republican hit list includes Children's Hospital New Orleans, the Port of New Orleans, Southern University, Odyssey House Louisiana, West Bank Ferry Terminal, City Park, Splash Park, LSU, Holy Rosary School, the Foundation for Science & Mathematics Education and the Superdome. Institutions that are keeping us safe and are central to our city’s vibrancy.

All this because we are taking steps to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our city. It’s unconscionable.

Now let me be clear: I wasn’t surprised by this heartless move and you shouldn’t be either. The practice of Republican lawmakers punishing and pre-empting New Orleans for progressive policies is not new.

They starve New Orleans of resources because they disagree with how we manage our own affairs. They want the tourism revenue generated here, but they don’t believe in funding the infrastructure that makes that revenue possible. They want to keep New Orleans on her knees and force us to ask “permission” to take care of ourselves.

I know it’s not the first, and it certainly won’t be the last time New Orleans is treated this way. That’s why I have been fighting for our city’s fair share since I became mayor.

So join me today in calling on legislative leadership to do what is right for the hard-working residents of New Orleans. Honor the financial and cultural contributions of our region, and put people over politics. Let’s control our own destiny.

Sincerely,
Mayor LaToya Cantrell
