Hi John,

One hundred and one years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified, granting American women the right to vote. We have a lot to celebrate following the recent anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, but we cannot ignore its complicated legacy. 

While women's right to vote was protected by the 19th Amendment theoretically, in practice the freedom to vote remained out of reach for most women of color, especially Black women. 

The vast majority of Black Americans lived in the South, where they faced race-based barriers to voting under Jim Crow laws. It was not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that the majority of Black women were able to exercise the right to vote without facing race-based barriers to the ballot box -- including poll taxes, literacy tests, and outright violence against Black voters. 

Over a century later, the promise of the 19th Amendment remains out of reach for many American women. Widespread racist, anti-democratic voter suppression laws means that many voters still face barriers to the ballot box. 

Join us in our work to secure access to the ballot box for every voter by calling your senators and urging them to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. This legislation just passed in the House and now it's on the Senate. Take action now. 

Black women have consistently outpaced national voter turnout rates and have always been leaders in the work to build a stronger, more inclusive democracy. We are proud to be working year-round to ensure everyone's voices are heard at the ballot box, especially those who have been historically excluded. 

Our communities and our democracy are stronger when everyone has the chance to make their voices heard. With your help, we can fulfill the promises of the 19th Amendment and our democracy for every voter.
