Yesterday my campaign sent a letter to Facebook asking them to pull down ads from a shady dark money group backing Trump with bold faced lies -- targeting me across the country.
The issue isn't free speech, Facebook -- It's your choice to profit off of selling your platform to promote Trump's lies about me.
Will you join me and my team by signing a letter to Facebook, demanding they not use their platforms for lies? Read below to sign the letter and chip in $5 to help my campaign fight back.
-- Joe Biden
Dear Facebook Public Policy and Global Elections Team:
A SuperPAC that calls itself the Committee to Defend the President began placing a false advertisement concerning Vice President Biden on Facebook on October 16, 2019.
We know about you recently-announced policy that you will accept any and all false advertising from a politician.
And we, the American voters and grassroots activists, have serious concerns with that astounding position.
That’s why we are demanding you not use your platform for lies, and in the meantime I am donating to Joe Biden to allow him to fight back against these viral lies:
Your policy grants blanket permission to candidates to use your platform to mislead American voters, all while Facebook profits from their advertising dollars.
BUT even Facebook’s deeply flawed policy of letting politicians lie on the platform does NOT apply to third-party groups, like the Committee to Defend the President. Advertisements submitted by such groups “must not contain deceptive, false, or misleading claims.”
The ads in question have been fact-checked by The Washington Post and numerous outlets -- all which say they are LIES:
Facebook’s decision to sell the Committee the tools to target certain segments of the population with lies, thereby profiting from the propagation of the Committee’s falsehoods, is something else entirely. That decision is indefensible.
That’s why you’re hearing from us concerned citizens that prioritize the health of American democracy.
There is time yet for Facebook to share that priority. I demand you disallow these false ads, and will be supporting Joe Biden’s campaign as the decisions you have made to make money continue to do harm:
False political content was shared more than 38 million times on Facebook in the three months leading up to the November 2016 election; and that content was among your platform’s top performing political content.
Facebook has promised the public, the United States Congress, and its users that it will not allow these errors to recur, and that its platform will no longer be a conduit for misinformation and a tool of political distortion.
Now is the time to translate those words into action.
Sincerely,
|
