** Falsely Imprisoned for Defending Sacred Waters: Bernardo Caal

Bernardo Caal is a well-known Q'eqchi' Maya leader and land and human rights defender in Guatemala who has been falsely imprisoned for three years. In 2020, he was officially declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. Caal is currently serving a seven-year sentence for crimes he did not commit. Read more. ([link removed])

** Remembering a Hawaiian Hero: Haunani-Kay Trask and Her Fight for the Rights of Native Hawaiians

** Cultural Survival Announces 2021 Indigenous Community Media Fund Grant Partners

Cultural Survival is pleased to announce the fifth round of grants from our Indigenous Community Media Fund. Eighteen grants were awarded in 11 countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Namibia, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Kenya, and South Africa), totaling $104,748. Read more. ** What 'A New Social Contract' Means For Indigenous Peoples ([link removed])

This year’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples' theme was "Leaving no one Behind: Indigenous Peoples and the call for a social contract.” The term social contract in relation to Indigenous Peoples may be confusing as this has not yet been discussed much. In this radio program, Radio Program Producer, Dev Kumar Sunuwar explores what a new social contract means for Indigenous Peoples.

International Day for People of African Descent will be celebrated for the first time on August 31, 2021. Through this observance, the UN aims to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent. Cultural activist Letitia Timas Petersen tells us the story of Franz Taaibosch, an Indigenous Korana South African who was taken abroad to be paraded as a circus act.
