On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed the landmark John Lewis Voting Rights Act, named after the legendary congressman and civil rights leader who passed away last year.

But today the Texas legislature is showing exactly why this bill is necessary. Today they will vote on SB1, their extreme voter suppression bill.

Democracy and voting rights are under attack — and Texas is on the front lines. Texas Democrats already showed Washington what it looks like to fight for our voting rights. Now it’s time for Washington to do its part.

The filibuster is an obstacle to progress for so many Americans. In spite of Democrats winning the House, the Senate, and the White House, Mitch McConnell is holding a veto — and it’s all because of the Senate filibuster.

We need real federal legislation to protect voting rights and our democracy. The filibuster is a Jim Crow relic that’s nowhere in the constitution.
