Israel continues to face real and growing threats. Below are incidents from simply the past 27 days.
Aug 24, 2021 - Hamas-backed Palestinians in Gaza launched a new wave of incendiary balloons into Israel. Fire balloons have ignited multiple fires across Israeli communities in recent weeks.
Aug 21, 2021: A Hamas-led protest grew violent on Saturday after dozens of people approached the fortified border fence and threw rocks and explosives toward Israeli soldiers. One Israeli police officer was shot and critically injured.
Aug 18, 2021: The IAEA announced Iran accelerated its enrichment of uranium to near weapons-grade with a second centrifuge now enriching uranium up to 60%. In April, Iran began enriching to 60% with one centrifuge. Weapons-grade is around 90% purity.
Aug 16, 2021: Palestinian terrorists in Gaza launched two rockets at Sderot, one of which was intercepted by Iron Dome and one of which fell short in Gaza.
Aug 11, 2021: Israel was forced to down two drones that crossed into Israeli territory. The first was a Hezbollah drone from Lebanon, and the second was a Hamas drone from Gaza.
Aug 6, 2021: Hezbollah fired 19 rockets toward Israel from Lebanon. Ten were intercepted by Iron Dome, six landed in open areas in Israel, three fell short of the border.
Aug 5, 2021: Iran swore-in its new hardline president, Ebrahim Raisi. On his first full day in office, Raisi met with the leaders of Hezbollah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Aug 4, 2021: Sirens blared in Kiryat Shmona as three rockets from Lebanon were fired into northern Israel. Two rockets hit open areas, while the third fell short of the border.
Aug 3, 2021: Iranian forces attempted to hijack and divert to Iran a civilian ship in international waters. This attack came just days after Iran attacked a civilian oil tanker off the coast of Oman, killing two crew members.
Aug 1, 2021: Hamas prevented U.N. inspectors from accessing two U.N. schools in Gaza that were used to shield the group's terror tunnels. The schools, which serve about 4,000 students, cannot open until they are deemed safe by the U.N.
Jul 29, 2021: A deadly drone attack on an oil tanker managed by an Israeli-owned company killed two people aboard. The United States, Britain and Israel all accused Iran of carrying out the drone attack.
This is the reality Israelis are forced to confront. Our work together is critical in ensuring that Congress is educated and engaged about the issues affecting Israel’s safety.
