BREAKING: The Supreme Court just allowed the restart of the unlawful and racist Trump-era ‘Remain in Mexico’ order which shuts the door to families and children fleeing danger who come to our doorstep seeking protection.

The news is horrific: the illegal Remain in Mexico policy denies women, children, and families who come to our doorstep the right to seek asylum and makes a mockery of due process. The U.S. cannot send families and children to suffer in some of Mexico’s most violent border cities while they wait for a hearing that may never come. We have a legal and moral obligation to welcome families and children with dignity and compassion.

The impacts of the Remain in Mexico policy have been atrocious — as of February 2021, there have been 1,544 cases of murder, rape, torture, kidnappings, or violent assault, including nearly 400 crimes against children. Children and families are given no choice but to live in tent camps without access to clean water, medical care, or schools.

This ruling is unconscionable, and we need to push the Biden administration to do all it can to make sure the program is ended and replaced with policies that restore a fair asylum system:

We cannot continue closing down legal pathways for people seeking safety rather than opening them up. We need to push the government to make different choices. We need immigration policies that uphold our values and welcome people into the U.S. with dignity and compassion.
