35 years ago, Hilda sheep was rescued from a deadpile at the now-defunct Lancaster Stockyard. This was the beginning of Farm Sanctuary—a radical act of compassion that sparked a grassroots movement that continues to change the world.

Today, alarm bells are sounding over factory farming’s destructive impact on society and the environment. Global awareness of farm animal suffering and sentience is growing and plant-based living is going mainstream.

We’ve come a long way since 1986—and we’ve done it together.

The Sanctuary movement wasn't created by one person or one organization, but by the collective actions of compassionate individuals—by believers.
