It's our democracy or the filibuster, John.
Yesterday, House Democrats voted to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in a party-line vote. This crucial legislation would restore parts of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and protect against GOP voter suppression laws being passed around the country.
Progress is happening, but to be frank with you, it shouldn't be this difficult to guarantee everyone has the right to vote in our country. Currently, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is headed to the same fate as legislation including the For the People Act, PRO Act, Dream Act, Equality Act, and Paycheck Fairness Act: Being stalled in the Senate thanks to the filibuster.
Let's make this clear, John: The filibuster must go because as long as Conservative Democrats and Senate Republicans refuse to end it, people's voting rights — and lives — are at risk.
It's more important than ever that we put our support behind Cori as she leads the movement to end the filibuster in the face of unending attacks from the far-right. Will you make a $5 donation today to show Cori there's a people-powered movement rising up with her in this work?
To keep the filibuster in place is to reinforce the antiquated and racist reasons it was introduced in the first place. That's why it's especially disappointing that it's not just the typical Republican obstructionists defending the filibuster — Conservative Democrats are also refusing to take action and end the Jim Crow filibuster.
Everything in our progressive agenda from passing a minimum wage of at least $15, environmental justice, gun violence prevention, immigration reform, worker protections, and transforming our criminal-legal system — hinges on ending the filibuster.
We must end the gridlock that has become common practice in Washington and govern boldly and transformatively to improve the lives of millions of people, children, and families all across the country. For too many of our communities, our very survival is at stake.
It's time we rise up against the filibuster and do what it takes to meaningfully legislate for the needs of St. Louis and communities like it. Will you chip in $5 or anything you can today to power Cori's organizing work to abolish the filibuster, protect voting rights, and pass progressive legislation?
In solidarity,
Team Cori
