Friend, I voted to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act through the House yesterday.
We're at a defining moment for our democracy. The original Voting Rights Act was gutted by a conservative majority on the Supreme Court eight years ago. Republican state legislatures then proceeded to pass a series of restrictive voting laws -- and their efforts to limit access to the ballot box have reached even more extreme heights in the wake of the 2020 election.
I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and we need it signed into law as soon as possible. It will restore the provisions that the Supreme Court struck down, and greatly enhance the Department of Justice's authority to block or challenge discriminatory voting laws passed by states.
John Lewis spent his entire life fighting so that no American’s right to vote would ever be infringed upon. From the streets of Selma to the halls of Congress, he knew that this was his mission. The passage and impact of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a testament to the incredible work by him and so many other courageous activists.
We cannot let that work be undone by outdated and arcane "norms". The biggest obstacle to sending the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to President Biden's desk for his signature is now the Senate filibuster. We are running out of time to pass legislation to defend our democracy, and we must show that there is the public will to abolish the filibuster.
Please add your name to support ending the filibuster so that we can pass voting rights legislation. We need as many signatures as possible to demonstrate that the American people want swift action.
Thank you,
Jennifer
