Our democracy flourishes when more people participate — not less.
That’s why it’s so important that the House just passed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act — landmark legislation that will expand access to the ballot box.
The future of our democracy depends on the Senate passing this legislation and the For the People Act, which will also take crucial measures to restore our democracy.
But here’s the problem: Not a single House Republican voted for either of these bills. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans already blocked a vote on the For the People Act, and they’re ready to make sure the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is blocked, too.
We can only pass this crucial legislation and protect voting rights and our democracy if we finally abolish the Jim Crow filibuster.
Back in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, and Republican state legislatures have taken advantage of this by passing law after law making it harder for people to vote. Just this year, 18 states have enacted 30 laws to restrict access to the ballot box — laws that will disproportionately impact Black and Brown voters.
The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore and strengthen the protections in the Voting Rights Act — combating racial discrimination and voter suppression. But it won’t get to President Biden’s desk unless the Senate gets rid of the filibuster to pass it.
