The Work is Far From Over in Haiti

I wanted to reach out to you with an update about our disaster relief response in Haiti. Our Emergency Response team is on the ground delivering critical medical supplies like bandages, sutures and antibiotics to clinics and hospitals in affected areas.

This week, the team was able to reach rural areas that had not yet received any help or supplies. The days are long for emergency responders, and so many people still need support after losing their homes and possessions.

“The director of the Immaculate Conception hospital says they’re seeing more than 100 patients every day coming into the emergency room, which is a very high volume for them,” says Cora Nally, part of the team in Les Cayes. While the hospital is open and operational, some patients are being treated outside beneath a tarp, and some doctors are working out of tents and running out of vital medicines.

In addition to the earthquake injuries, we’re seeing more and more chronic health challenges and increased risk of infectious diseases — like COVID-19 and cholera — due to crowded temporary living conditions and lack of clean water. Another major health concern is the trauma that comes with such a devastating disaster which is often worsened by sudden aftershocks of the earthquake.

Our teams in Les Cayes are working with a local Haitian medical team to provide additional support to overwhelmed hospitals. They are delivering lifesaving medical supplies and continuing to assess what the greatest needs are in isolated rural communities.
