For years we have been pushing against the well-funded efforts of Big Oil companies and climate deniers to block critical measures to fight global warming. Now, after four years of moving backwards under Trump, there is no time left to waste.
The climate crisis is here and now — and we must move quickly and decisively to a clean energy world. We must also address the damage that climate change is already wreaking on our communities.
That’s why I proposed the Polluters Pay Climate Fund plan to require the worst emitters of greenhouse gases — mostly Big Oil companies — to help pay the costs of climate clean-up. And we are pushing to include this initiative, along with other climate measures, in the Democratic reconciliation bill.
Our plan makes historic investments of nearly $3.5 trillion toward combating climate change, providing universal early education, reducing the costs of prescription drugs and child care, extending the recent tax cuts for middle class families with children, expanding Medicare coverage to include dental, vision and hearing services — and much more. This will be paid for by much-needed reforms to our tax system to close corporate loopholes and ensure the super wealthy contribute more to the success of our country.
The House has now passed the same budget resolution that cleared the Senate. That sets up an historic opportunity to pass these measures as part of a budget reconciliation bill in September that will incorporate the Build Back Better agenda. That is going to require support from every one of our 50 Democratic senators.
Add your name if you agree that we must take bold action to confront climate change and enact this historic and ambitious plan for our country.
Together, we can and must build a sustainable shared future for all. And now is the time to act!
Thank you.
