August 25, 2021
Dear John,
Since the 2020 election, attacks on the right to vote have ramped up, with state legislatures in Texas and around the country working to make it harder for eligible Americans to vote.
Voting rights should not be a partisan issue, and as the late Congressman John Lewis said, voting is a sacred right, one that should be protected to safeguard our democracy. That is why yesterday, I joined my colleagues in voting to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act restores these critical provisions limiting states’ abilities to impose unfair and burdensome voter restrictions. Restoring these measures will make sure that every American who is eligible to vote can do so without difficulty.
Last week, I also introduced the Protecting Election Administration from Interference Act. This bill would improve our democracy by establishing greater safeguards against potential election subversion efforts and expand existing protections against election interference.
Our democracy is at an inflection point and I’m glad the House passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to strengthen our democracy. I’ll keep working to shore up our democracy by passing legislation that expands voting access so that no matter who you are or where you live, every citizen has equal access to the ballot box.
As always, my team and I are always here to answer your questions and help with any issues you have with federal agencies. If you would like to contact me, please send an email, or call my office at 972-972-7949.
It is an honor to serve North Texas, where I was born and raised.
Sincerely,
Colin Allred Member of Congress
