The U.S. House returned to Washington and in a close 220-212 vote, advanced a historic $3.5 trillion budget blueprint that makes essential investments in people, families and communities. Our work is not done, however.

This resolution sets the stage to create the final legislation, which is now underway.

Corporate lobbyists will be working overtime to pressure members of Congress. They are going to be fighting to keep their tax loopholes in place. We need to counter that with our own massive grassroots lobbying effort. This budget would enable sweeping investments in affordable health care, education, housing, nutrition and more. But, since moderate Democrats in the House and Senate want every investment fully paid for, we can only invest as much money as we raise. That means Congress must be bold in demanding the rich and corporations start paying their fair share.

In the coming weeks, moderate members of Congress will talk about "the size of the package as being too large" without getting into specifics on whether they would cut child care, housing, higher education, clean energy, or child tax credits—which are already making historic progress lifting families from poverty.

Senator Joe Manchin, a critical vote in the Senate, said he has "serious concerns" about the spending level of this budget.¹ Senator Kyrsten Sinema, also said she won't vote for a $3.5 trillion budget.²

We have to remind them that this is an historic opportunity to pass the most critical investments in health care, housing, child care, and paid leave since the New Deal. And we must remind them that we CAN afford these essential investments when we finally ask corporations and the wealthy to pay their fair share.
