Dear John,
I can't get the voice from a story this week out of my mind.
‘Mohammad’ is a former translator for U.S. troops and now lives in San Diego. He fears retribution by the Taliban on the family he had to leave behind in Afghanistan.
"They are everywhere in Afghanistan right now. So, if I couldn't come to the United States, they will find me, and definitely they will find my colleagues in Afghanistan,
They have to pass the Taliban checkpoints to go to the airport and around the gates, they have everything, some of them even have the Visas, but they cannot enter the airport because of the crowds outside the airport and near to the gates."
The fears of the Taliban directly threatening Afghans or their family members who worked with the US aren’t just fears – they're becoming reality, as these letters from the Taliban threatening the brother of an Afghan translator show:
"You chose this path for yourself and your death is eminent [sic], God willing."
In recent days, we keep
seeing these stories again and again. These people helped American soldiers in Afghanistan, and now it’s our turn to help them. We need the Biden administration to prioritize the safety of our Afghan allies and refugees.
Time is running out, and the Biden administration should operate as if each day is their last day to evacuate our allies. If you’re as troubled by the situation in Afghanistan as I am, send the Biden administration a message, urging them to act NOW to evacuate refugees and our Afghan allies quickly.
