“This is a critical piece of legislation that fills the gap left by the disastrous Shelby County decision, and it would be an essential tool to fight racial discrimination in voting.” -- A.G. Holder
Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4 -- aka the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This is a major step toward restoring and strengthening the right to vote.
H.R. 4 would restore the VRA protections gutted by SCOTUS’ Shelby County decision eight years ago, which unleashed a persistent wave of restrictive voting laws in states across the country and unsurprisingly had a disproportionate impact on communities of color.
After the House passed the bill, A.G. Holder said: “With waves of anti-voter bills being considered or passed in state capitals, and the critical redistricting process underway, it’s time for the Senate to step up and act to protect voting rights.”

If the Senate passes comprehensive voting rights reforms like H.R. 1 and H.R. 4, we can better combat gerrymandering and some of the restrictions to voting rights that we’re seeing at the state level.
But there’s still more work to do to make this bill become law.
Thank you for fighting for voting rights,
