Yesterday the House passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4), which will now go to the Senate for debate. Grassroots organizations around the country, including Indivisible, are advocating strongly for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which reinstates parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 struck down by several recent SCOTUS decisions. This legislation will also serve as a roadblock for Republican state legislatures bent on restricting access to the vote. The bill faces stiff opposition from Senate Republicans, who recently blocked passage of another voting rights bill, the For the People Act. In order for the Senate to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the filibuster must be eliminated or reformed.

On the same day, the House passed a $3.5 trillion budget resolution, which will be critical for passing the “human infrastructure bill” (also known as the Reconciliation bill) in September. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (BIB, or “Invest in America Act”) passed by the US Senate August 10 has to be voted on by September 27 based on today’s agreement between Speaker Pelosi and moderate democrats in the House, who had insisted on passing the BIB first. We are asking our representatives to resist this and pass the two infrastructure bills together, because once the corporate-friendly BIB is passed, conservative Democrats may withdraw their support for the broader reconciliation bill.

Contact your representative ([link removed]) , thank them for passing H.R. 4 and the budget resolution, and ask them to prioritize passing the American Families and Jobs Plan, or the human infrastructure bill, under which the Build Back Better priorities are covered.

** Qualified Immunity and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the Senate
------------------------------------------------------------
Something we’re keeping our eyes on: ending qualified immunity is essential to the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Alarm bells were raised last week when Congressional sources reported that the version of the bill senators Booker and Scott are amending for presentation to the Senate no longer included alterations to the legal doctrine of qualified immunity.

Read our blog to find out why ending qualified immunity is essential ([link removed]) to legislation addressing injustices and racist violence in policing.

** The Recall Election is going on now—and there’s less than a week left to register to vote in it!
------------------------------------------------------------
If you haven't gotten a ballot in your mail for the gubernatorial recall election, check your voter status ([link removed]) right now. If you need to update your address or reactivate an inactive registration, register to vote ([link removed]) immediately. You can do it online in only a few minutes, and if you do it now, you'll get a ballot mailed to you. The deadline to register is Monday, August 30—now less than a week away.

If you miss that deadline, you can still vote, but you'll need to do it in person. Ask a poll worker about conditional voter registration ([link removed]) .

If or when you have your ballot, use it! Read our step-by-step instructions ([link removed]) on how to vote in the recall election before the deadline—which is coming up fast in just a few short weeks. We need to prevent the right wing from removing our Democratic governor from office, and that means getting our ballots in before the deadline on Tuesday, September 14.

You can cast your ballot either by mail or by dropping it off at City Hall or your local polling place. If you choose to mail it, we recommend doing that no later than Tuesday, September 7—one week before the deadline—due to mail delays (thanks, Postmaster General DeJoy). If you choose to deliver your ballot in person, check the Department of Elections website ([link removed]) for details on when and where.

Already voted? That’s great! Thank you for being a voter! Now it’s time to spread the word. Turnout is everything in this election, and we need to mobilize as many Democratic voters as possible to stop the recall. One key step is relational organizing: tell all of your friends and family to make a plan to vote. Then join a phone bank, text bank, write postcards, or canvass to reach out to the wider community! Find our voter outreach events, as well as all the materials you can share, on our Vote webpage ([link removed]) .
