Dear John

More than 3000 of you took the time to send a message to your local MP regarding the undemocratic Elections Bill.

The Bill is an assault on our freedoms and represents an insidious power grab by the Government, which seeks to make itself unaccountable.

We must not let this happen.

By emailing your MP, you have taken an action that may seem small but which can have a significant impact. If MPs across the country see that the British public will not sit quietly in the face of anti-democratic legislation, they will know that this is an issue they must fight vociferously to successfully represent their constituents.

If you’re wondering how you can continue to help with our campaign, there are many actions you can take. Writing to your local newspaper is a really effective way of getting the message out there in your local community and making sure that editors across the country realise that this issue needs coverage as it is of high public interest. Additionally, as local newspapers are often part of cross-country media groups which syndicate publication of certain news features, your letter may well have reach far beyond your local town!

If you’d like to send a letter, do feel free to use the text below:

Dear editor,

The Elections Bill will allow ministers to define and curtail ‘campaigning’, could make coordinating opposition an offence, and permits political meddling in the Electoral Commission. The Bill will undergo a second reading in the House of Commons on 7th September - and we can’t let it pass.

A free election is one where unaffiliated organisations, charities and even the person on the street can be part of the debate. And where independent groups like Best for Britain, can provide voters with information on parties and their policies.

By putting restrictions on campaigning and cross-party co-operation, this bill stifles healthy opposition.
