The House just passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, restoring the historic VRA that my friend and hero Rep. Lewis fought so tirelessly for!
To fully honor his legacy, we must protect the right to vote and end voter suppression in America — but we can only do that by finally ending the Jim Crow filibuster.
This historic civil rights legislation will now be stuck in the Senate unless we act. The filibuster has been used countless times to block progress on civil rights and voting rights — and Mitch McConnell even used it to block simply beginning debate on the For the People Act earlier this year.
Both the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act would protect our elections from the kind of extreme voter suppression and gerrymandering that Republican lawmakers are deploying in states across the country. But the filibuster is standing in the way, and we’re running out of time to stop Republican-controlled state legislatures from passing hundreds of restrictive voter suppression laws.
