Team,
The House just passed H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. And not a single Republican voted for it.
Since the beginning of 2021 alone, Republican state legislatures have passed or proposed over 400 bills restricting voting rights.
Tennesseans haven’t been spared from this all-out assault on our democracy. Our state already ranks among the hardest states in which to vote. But Republicans in the legislature want to make it even harder.
They’ve proposed eliminating early voting entirely and even requiring every voter to be fingerprinted. It’s no coincidence that Tennessee consistently has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the nation.
I’ve made voting rights a priority my whole career because I believe Congress has a moral obligation to defend every American’s sacred right to vote. I’ve even introduced a constitutional amendment that would ensure the right to vote by barring voter suppression and the ability of any state to deny or abridge the right of its citizens to vote. We can win the fight against voter suppression and intimidation, but we must act right now.
Thanks to Democrats in the House, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is one step closer to becoming law. But tragically, it wasn’t easy. Republicans plan to rely on voting restrictions to take back power in Washington. That's why we need the Senate to pass H.R. 4 and President Biden to sign it into law.
The attack on voting rights threatens our democracy. I need your help to defend our democratic values and system. Can I count on you?
