John,
I was proud to cast my vote to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act today. I proudly voted in favor as a Georgia Democrat, and in honor of my friend and colleague John’s legacy.
I know he’d be right there with us in this fight, too. In the wake of last year’s record-breaking turnout, Republicans in Georgia and in state houses across the country are passing a new wave of voter suppression laws designed to silence the voice of the American people – especially Black and brown folks.
The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act confronts this “Jim Crow 2.0” head-on. If he were with us today, John would be one of the first to say that passing the legislation that now bears his name is of the utmost importance to strengthen our fragile democracy.
The House just did our part to honor John’s legacy and ensure his fight for voting rights continues. Now, it’s the Senate’s turn to do theirs. I urge my Senate colleagues to immediately pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Our right to free and fair elections is too precious and too imperiled to be left to partisan political agendas.
John always said that if we see something that is not right, not fair, and not just, we have to do something about it. John, I hope you’ll join me in calling on the Senate to do their part to confront the GOP’s wrong, unjust, and unfair legislation and preserve one of our most sacred rights as Americans.
Too much is at stake for us to stand by and stay silent now.
More soon,
-- Lucy
