If you work hard, if you save, that dream of having your own place should be in reach. For too many people though, it just isn’t – and that’s not right.

Today in Hamilton we announced that a re-elected Liberal government will move forward with a plan to put home ownership back within reach and make buying your first home easier, fairer, and more affordable.

To increase supply and ease competition in the housing market, we’ll build, preserve, or repair 1.4 million homes in four years, and we’ll help young families save for a down payment faster with a new rent-to-own program and a new tax-free First Home Savings Account. We’ll also make sure the home buying process is fair and transparent with a new Home Buyers’ Bill of Rights.

You shouldn’t have to move far away from your job, or school, or family, to afford your rent. You shouldn’t lose a bidding war on your home to speculators. It’s time for things to change.

Since 2015, our Liberal team has helped more than two million Canadians find a safe and affordable place to call home. We also worked hard to address housing affordability and availability across Canada. This includes building thousands of new homes, creating jobs, growing the middle class, and reducing chronic homelessness through the National Housing Strategy and Rapid Housing Initiative.

Canadians need a government that will move forward to ensure every Canadian has a safe place to call home. We need to keep moving forward – for everyone.

Over the past five and a half years, we’ve made remarkable progress together. Now, I’m counting on your hope and hard work to keep building on the work we’re doing together.
