Help Us Stop a Fracked Gas Power Plant from Being Built in Astoria's Asthma Alley
Want to stop a multi-billion-dollar energy corporation from building a new fracked gas power plant in Astoria, Queens?
Of course you do! Not only is fracking terrible, but New York City doesn’t need a new power plant burning fossil fuels, producing toxic emissions that choke our communities and contribute to the climate crisis. Especially in Astoria, which has long been known as “Asthma Alley” due to its disproportionately high rates of respiratory illnesses.
Rather than develop a renewable energy facility as New Yorkers have mandated through their overwhelming support of the Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act, the Texas-based company, NRG, wants to build a new fracked gas plant to replace their old one. And the existing NRG plant is so dirty that the state is forcing the company to shut it down!
If you live in New York State, here’s how you can help:
Before this folly gets approved, New York State is calling for public comments about the proposed plant – through virtual hearings and email submissions – this week. And with Governor Kathy Hochul taking office today, this is an ideal opportunity to let the new executive leadership in Albany know that we won’t stand for anymore fossil fuel power plants – let alone one powered by fracked gas.
OPTION #1: Register to give testimony at one of the virtual hearings on Thursday, August 26. These virtual hearings will be held at 1:00 PM and at 6:00 PM. The deadline to register for this is by 10:00 AM tomorrow – Wednesday, August 25. It’s crucial that as many New Yorkers as possible give testimonies at these hearings so Governor Hochul knows that her only viable option is to deny the project. Register to Testify
Communities like Queens were devastated by the pandemic, and they don’t need another source of pollution. Please take the time to voice your opposition to this pollution plant. Let the new Governor know that we are done with fossil fuels and fracked gas!
