Friend,

The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a budget resolution that secures over $100 billion for a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants. This historic package also expands the safety net with investments in health care, child and elder care, education, and climate action.

We are on the verge of major votes in Congress — votes on the final bill that will provide much-needed relief for our communities, including lasting solutions for undocumented immigrants nationwide.

As Congress debates the terms of budget reconciliation, it has a historic opportunity to fundamentally transform our country’s immigration system for the better.

You’ve heard us say this before, but we’re going to say it again: THIS IS OUR MOMENT TO FINALLY CREATE A PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP.

Friendit has been 35 years since Congress passed meaningful legislation related to citizenship. Our world has changed so much since then — we need to build a 21st-century immigration system. We at the National Immigration Law Center have been working for years to achieve a pathway to citizenship. Our momentum is undeniable. We truly believe this is the year we can finally get it done.

Our current health and economic crises have further highlighted what we already know: Immigrants are essential — we are homeowners, small business owners, neighbors, and essential workers. In fact, nearly three-quarters of all immigrants in the U.S. workforce — including more than 5 million undocumented immigrants — are working in essential roles and helping us get through the COVID-19 pandemic. Applauding immigrant contributions is not enough; we must recognize immigrants under the law, as part of our efforts to provide relief from the pandemic. There is no recovery for any of us without immigrants.

We can’t do this without you, Friend. Do you have one minute to send an email to your members of Congress? We have to keep up the pressure if we want to make it happen this year.

Gracias,

Marielena Hincapié
Executive Director, National Immigration Law Center
