Hi, friends -
Tomorrow, Alessandra will lead a Senate hearing to investigate the Joint Committee on Public Ethics (JCOPE), New York’s ineffective ethics and lobbying oversight board.
The hearing is part of Alessandra’s continued crusade to clean up Albany. This investigation into JCOPE is badly needed, and we’re proud of Alessandra for leading the charge for reform. We’ll explain more about the history of JCOPE and where we can go from here in just a moment, but first:
As many of you know, Albany has been plagued with corruption for decades. In 2011, JCOPE was founded in an attempt to root that corruption out by launching investigations into ethical violations and regulating lobbying in New York state.
But an organization that is corrupt can not, of course, do an effective job investigating corruption. Since its founding, the board has struggled to earn trust with the public due to persistent integrity issues.
Here are some examples of JCOPE’s failures:
Alessandra has long supported an overhaul of JCOPE, and this hearing will be an opportunity for her and other senators to truly get to the bottom of the board’s troubles so we can begin the process of reform.
And the fact that New York State is under new leadership with Governor Kathy Hochul means that we have a real opportunity to make change and overhaul JCOPE so that it functions as originally intended.
If you’d like to show your support for Alessandra going into the hearing, please:
Thank you for your support, and we will share more information on the hearing once we have it.
