As soon as TODAY, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA), and Members of Congress need to hear from YOU!
Here’s what you can say when you call:
“My name is John, and I’m calling because we MUST pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and stop the attacks on the freedom to vote across the country. Please do everything in your power to pass and support HR4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Thank you!”
The late Georgia Congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis was nearly killed marching for voting rights in the 1965 "Bloody Sunday" riot, as state troopers attacked voting rights activists on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The sacrifices made by Lewis and others led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
But the Republican majority on the Supreme Court has repeatedly undermined the Voting Rights Act, opening the door to voter suppression attempts around the country. As a result, 20 GOP-led states have passed 30 laws attacking the freedom to vote, and over 400 voter suppression bills have been introduced by Republican lawmakers around the country this year.
That’s why Members of Congress MUST vote to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and restore protections gutted by the Supreme Court! The VRAA would restore federal preclearance for state voting laws, stopping changes to voting rules that discriminate based on race or background before they can be implemented.
It’s essential that the bill has as much momentum as possible as it moves into the Senate. Members of Congress need to feel the heat from constituents to not just vote for the bill, but speak out publicly, lobby Senators, and do everything they can to get the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk!
