Hi John,

This morning we found out that machinery was on its way to drill a huge new oil field in the North Sea. The Cambo oil field will create climate pollution equal to 16 coal-fired power plants running for a year! [1] But now the oil company is panicking and backtracking with the government's permit process in total chaos. [2]

With the oil company ready to install key drilling equipment in the North Sea at first notice and government permission an utter mess we can’t hang around. Will you help pressure the government to cancel Cambo for good before the company gets another opportunity to start building at sea by emailing Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary and asking him to make the right decision for our planet?

The UK government continues to claim that we’re world leaders in fighting climate change, but this couldn’t be further from the truth if they allow more oil drilling in the North Sea.

Last week Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon asked the UK government to reassess plans for the new oil field [3], the leader of the opposition Keir Starmer has called for Cambo to be scrapped [4] and John Kerry, the US Envoy for climate and the International Energy Agency have said there’s no need for any new fossil fuels [5][6]. The UK government stands alone in its position on the Cambo oil field.

It’s an utter embarrassment that in a year where the UK is hosting the COP26 UN climate talks and just weeks after the latest IPCC climate report put humanity on code red, another oil project which threatens the future of the planet is in planning to be built even as thousands of people call for it to be cancelled.

Every email sent today will pile the pressure on those in power to make the right decision and stop Cambo from going ahead. Please send an email now.
