Friends, As we speak, state legislatures across the country are gearing up for long legal battles as they prepare for redistricting — the way federal congressional district boundaries get drawn. Redistricting happens every 10 years as a result of the census, and in most states, the legislature is in charge of drawing the lines. This has led to gerrymandering, where the majority party uses their power to draw boundaries that give them a political advantage. This year, with Republicans in control of so many state houses all across the country, you can be sure they’re not going to let this opportunity go to waste — most often at the expense of Black, Latinx, and Native American voters. As it stands, state-level officials could hand a majority in the U.S. House to the Republican Party through redistricting alone. Even historic Democratic turnout may not be enough to overcome partisan gerrymandering at this scale. We need to make sure congressional district lines are drawn in a non-partisan way. Under the For the People Act, they would be. That’s why we’re asking you today: The For the People Act passed in the House all the way back in March, and has unified support among Senate Democrats — but Mitch McConnell blocked it from passing. Democracy means we compete based on our ideas. Dark money that corrupts our politics and tools of voter suppression like gerrymandering and restricting ballot access, are not only un-democratic, but un-American. Voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. Peter's top priority is protecting the right to vote and the will of the voters. Passing the For the People Act is our best chance to save them. That’s why this is so important, and it’s why we’re asking you today: Thank you in advance for your support. - Team Welch
