Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., attends a news conference outside the Capitol with members of the House Freedom Caucus to discuss the “expulsion of members from the House Republican Conference", on Thursday, July 29, 2021. Tom Williams | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is under investigation by the Federal Election Commission for misuse of campaign funds. On August 17th, the FEC sent a letter to the Boebert campaign inquiring about four Venmo (a popular payment app) payments from the campaign to the Congresswoman totaling more than $6,000. The Boebert campaign alleges that the expenses were billed to the campaign account in error and have already been reimbursed. The payments logged by the campaign do not specify what the expenses were for and appear intentionally vague. The FEC letter states that, if the expenses constitute personal use of campaign funds, further legal action against the Boebert campaign could be pursued. Multiple ethics groups have taken notice of Boebert's blatant misuse of her donors moeny. In February, the Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit watchdog group, filed an FEC complaint requesting an investigation into the more than $20,000 in mileage reimbursements (enough miles to circumnavigate the world one and a half times) she logged during her 2020 campaign, suggesting she may have used these funds for personal purposes. With reactionary right-wing politicians such as Boebert, it is not a rare sight to see blatant stealing of donor funds. The last couple years has been a hotbed for such cases with people close to Trump. For example, former Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter was sentenced to 11 months for stealing more than $150,000 from his campaign coffers, only to be pardoned by Trump before his leaving office. This systemic unaccountability and mishandling of publicly funded money coming primarily from one side of the aisle is a scary attack on integrity and public trust. Government officials are there to serve the people they rule over, not scam them. Republican officials like Boebert promote policies that push impoverished people further into financial ruin, and then steal the money given to them by those gullible enough to believe that they are there to help. Those are not the lawmakers we need. We need strong, trustworthy officials that will uphold our interests above all else and will not misuse our money. We need to do everything we can to unseat Boebert and ensure that scammers like her hold no position of authority.
