John -- Today I am thrilled to introduce you to our latest addition to the Brand New Congress 2022 slate!
Stephanie Gallardo is a teacher and a union organizer, the daughter of refugees and immigrants who comes from a long line of changemakers with a proud tradition of standing up to government corruption. When a violent coup backed by the U.S. government deposed the democratically elected government of Chile in 1973, Stephanie’s grandfather, Atillo Gallardo, was rounded up as a political prisoner.
For three years he was tortured by the Pinochet regime while her grandmother and their children lived in hiding. With the help of international aid organizations, Stephanie’s grandfather was freed, and the family was reunited and resettled in Seattle.
That was over 40 years ago, and Seattle has been the Gallardo family’s home -- and the home of many other Chilean refugees -- ever since.
Stephanie has dedicated her life to public service to give back to the community that gave her family a chance.
As a high school history teacher and an elected union leader, she has continued her family’s tradition of speaking truth to power and holding our leadership accountable.
Earlier this year she met with her incumbent as part of a union delegation to address their serious safety concerns with COVID in schools. He blew them off and patronized them -- so Stephanie decided to run for his seat.
Brand New Congress has taken on Rep. Adam Smith before. BNC recruited a candidate to run for this seat in 2018, and proved this district is ready for bold, progressive leadership.
We’re ready to help Stephanie win. Will you split a contribution between her campaign and Brand New Congress now? If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Stephanie is fighting for the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, educational justice, building worker power, and ending forever wars.
She’s fighting for a just and moral immigration system because she believes the U.S. government should welcome all who flee violence and political oppression -- like Afghan asylum seekers -- just as her family was embraced.
Like all BNC candidates, Stephanie refuses to take money from corporate PACs or lobbyists.
Welcome, Stephanie!
