August News from AHC Inc. News from AHC Inc. l August 2021 Developing affordable homes and helping communities thrive since 1975. HUD Secretary Visits The Spire in Alexandria We were delighted to welcome HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge, Congressional Representative Don Beyer, and City of Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson to The Spire, which provides 113 new affordable apartments in the City of Alexandria. The recent event celebrated successful community partnerships and also highlighted the Biden administration’s Build Back Better initiative, which proposes to create 2 million new affordable and low-income homes, among other programs. Along with touring the property, Secretary Fudge also visited with residents from age 7 to 77 who proudly talked about their new home and community. The Spire came to life thanks to the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection's mission-driven commitment to creating much-needed affordable housing in the community. In Virginia, our Resident Services team is distributing 950 backpacks to elementary school students living at our Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church apartment communities. We are also delivering school supplies to middle and high school students. Students (and their parents!) are delighted to receive the backpacks stuffed to the brim with notebooks, pens, pencils and more. Some, like the first-grade twins with red masks pictured above, are going to school for the first time in-person because of the pandemic and are thrilled to start fully prepared. We are grateful to the many donors, volunteers, and community partners who are helping us reach so many students. Special thanks to the Arlington County Police Department for helping assemble the bags and to Rotary Club of Arlington and Episcopal Church of the Resurrection for donating backpacks. Much appreciation to the donors of the Volunteer Arlington Buy a Neighbor School Supplies Drive, which provided $1,500 for school supplies to middle and high school students. In Maryland, Resident Services is also distributing hundreds of backpacks, along with housekeeping supplies, thanks to generous support and partners Amerigroup & Sinai Lifebridge Health. Events have been festive community gatherings, including free Italian Ice for all thanks to a Rita's food truck supplied by Comcast. There's still time to help fill a backpack. Donate here!
