Hi friend,

Spotlight on Haiti

This week is the 230th anniversary of the most acclaimed and successful slave rebellion in history – the overthrow of French colonial rule in Haiti.

Despite securing freedom, France had demanded the equivalent of $17 billion in today’s terms, in compensation for the loss of income, property and slaves.

This was 10 times the nation’s annual revenue at the time and was still being paid up until 1947.

Payment relied on taking out loans, crippling the economy for decades and trapping Haiti in debt.

Haiti, one of the world’s more poorest countries, is also vulnerable to the harsh realities of the climate crisis. Only a few days after the earthquake this month, the country experienced heavy rain as tropical Storm Grace approached, causing flooding and significant challenges for the humanitarian response.

Haiti’s historical and current debt is crippling the country’s ability to protect citizens from the devastation of the climate crisis and natural disasters like earthquakes.

With the G20 summit and global climate negotiations (COP26) approaching, global South governments, civil society organisations and communities will be making strong demands on global leaders to do better on debt relief. And we’ll be standing with them.

Enjoy the blog and best wishes from all of us at JDC.

In Solidarity,

Tess
