I believe that our democracy is strongest when every American has the ability to exercise their right to participate in the electoral process.
As New Mexico’s Senator, I am honored every day to have the opportunity to fight for the diverse communities across our state and ensure that their voices are being heard.
Over 200,000 Native Americans call New Mexico home and contribute to the rich culture within our communities. Across the country, Native people often face a unique set of challenges that impede their ability to be civically engaged.
That’s why I’m proud to share that I recently introduced the Frank Harrison, Elizabeth Peratrovich, and Miguel Trujillo Native American Voting Rights Act of 2021 — or NAVRA.
This piece of legislation is intended to protect Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and voters who live on Tribal lands to ensure that they have the right to vote and have equal access to the electoral process.
This is a crucial step in lessening many of the systemic barriers that Native populations face in our country — and it opens opportunities for a larger population to engage with the electoral process and create positive change in their communities.
It is imperative that we pass NAVRA and expand access to the ballot box to our Native communities. Add your name if you believe we should continue fighting to protect the right to vote.
Con gratitud,
Ben Ray
