Learn about your state’s response to human trafficking.

** The 2020 State Reports are available now.

** Dear John,
------------------------------------------------------------

I am excited to share with you that the Human Trafficking Institute’s 2020 State Reports are available now on our website ([link removed]) ! These Reports provide an overview of 2020 federal human trafficking prosecutions in all 50 states, four U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. Learn more about your state’s response to human trafficking here ([link removed]) .

For the first time, the 2020 State Reports compile data from every federal criminal human trafficking prosecution in each state since 2000, the year the Trafficking Victims Protection Act became law. This information allows us to examine trends in each state’s efforts to prosecute human trafficking over time.

** Fast Facts from 2020:
------------------------------------------------------------
*
** In Texas, 20 new criminal human trafficking cases were filed in federal courts. 18 defendants were convicted. See the Texas State Report here ([link removed]) .
------------------------------------------------------------
*
** In Mississippi, 100 percent of active defendants in federal courts were charged with sex trafficking, and zero percent were charged with forced labor. See the Mississippi State Report here ([link removed]) .
------------------------------------------------------------
*
** In California, federal courts ordered six out of 13 convicted defendants to pay restitution to their victim(s), similarly to 2018 and 2019. See the California State Report here ([link removed]) .
------------------------------------------------------------
*
** In New York, 10 new criminal human trafficking cases were filed in federal courts. 22 defendants were convicted. See the New York State Report here ([link removed]) .
------------------------------------------------------------

This data is pulled from the 2020 Federal Human Trafficking Report ([link removed]) , an annual publication of HTI that provides comprehensive data from every federal criminal human trafficking prosecution that U.S. courts handle and trends from civil cases each year. The Report’s findings are not a prevalence estimate of trafficking in the United States, but instead, serve as an objective summary of how the federal system holds traffickers accountable for their exploitative conduct.

Estimates of how much human trafficking is happening in the United States vary greatly, but HTI provides the tools to track the federal response to this often hidden crime. HTI’s State Reports fill a much-needed gap in data collection and assist the U.S. government in combatting human trafficking through the criminal justice system.
